The year is 1997 and in a police state future the island of Manhattan has been turned into a maximum-security prison. The rules are simple: once you’re in, you don’t come out. But when the United States president (Donald Pleasance) crash lands an escape pod into the centre of the city after fleeing a hijacked plane, a ruthless prison warden (Lee Van Cleef) bribes ex-soldier and criminal Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) into entering the hazardous Manhattan and rescuing the stranded President from the twisted underworld and the demented clutches of its criminal overlord The Duke (Isaac Hayes).
CAVE OF CULT caught an early 4k screening at London’s Prince Charles Cinema. The 4k print was stunning and a complete revelation.Die-hard fans will have watched this way back in 1982 when the Avco Embassy VHS was released. The first edition was a pan and scan print missing a lot of the detail.Carpenter’s vision is fully restored in this Limited Collector’s Edition set.
Written by Nick Castle (‘The Shape’ in Halloween (1978) and Halloween (2018)) and John Carpenter and featuring what is undoubtedly the most stellar cast from any Carpenter feature.
The computer graphics on the glider display screens were animated as computer graphics were expensive at the time. To generate the wire-frame city scape, sfx designers built a model of the city, attached bright white tape to the buildings to simulate a grid system. The camera then tracked through the city.DOP Dean Cundey used a special lens to extract the maximum amount of light from the night time shoots. The buildings in the background were matte-painted by James Cameron.

It may have been 40 years since Michael Myers returned to terrorise his hometown but the horror is as real today.
Revisit Haddonfield this Halloween as John Carpenter’s classic horror film is re-released on DVD, Blu-ray and for the first time on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray (which also includes 5 lobby-style artcards) to celebrate 40 years of terror.
With a soundtrack to remember, a face mask you’ll want to forget and scares that stay with you beyond the 31st October – this is the only movie worth watching this Halloween.
The main reason for purchasing this release is the 4K Ultra HD presentation of Halloween which comes at a very reasonable price compared to most titles currently available in the 4K range. As has been previously discussed, Carpenter shot Halloween on a Panavision Panaflex camera using 35mm film. The master 35mm print was scanned in 4K and has been used for this Ultra HD release of Halloween to tie-in with the 40th Anniversary of the films release. Image wise, this 4K Ultra HD release uses the native 4K 3840 x 2160p picture in Widescreen (2.35:1).
This is the first film I have seen in 4K and, as a seasoned horror fan and as a die-hard fan of HALLOWEEN, this presentation is a complete revelation.I have never seem the film looking this clean and fresh and (some audio issues aside) this is the Horror re-release of the year.As prices of 4K Players will reduce over the coming months I urge Horror fans to pick this release up.The only downside is the Blu-ray included here.As this is the 40th Anniversary release of the film we still have included in this set the same Blu-ray Disc as used in the 35th Anniversary release from 2013.
4K UHD BD Special Features:
Commentary track with writer/director John Carpenter and star Jamie Lee Curtis.
‘The Night She Came Home’ new featurette with Jamie Lee Curtis in HD.
Trailers and TV & Radio Spots.
THE LOST GRINDHOUSE CLASSIC!
A rare specimen from the more deranged end of the Grindhouse spectrum, Miss Leslie’s Dolls is a memorably demented tale of possession and transvestitism from director Joseph G. Prieto (who, under the name Joseph P. Mawra, directed the outrageous 1965 lesbian sexploitation “documentary” Chained Girls). Believed lost for decades, it has been re-mastered from original film elements especially for this release.
Stranded in the backwoods during a thunderstorm, a beautiful teacher and her three promiscuous students take refuge at a lonely house owned by the middle-aged Miss Leslie. Miss Leslie, however, is less a mild-mannered spinster and more an axe-wielding, homicidal cross-dresser intent on transferring his spirit into the nubile body of any girl foolish enough to come visiting.
Miss Leslies Dolls has been newly scanned from one of the few surviving prints in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The restoration carried out involved careful grain management, both automated and manual removal of film dirt and damage, and correction of major instability, warping and density fluctuations.
Truly a lost film and barely released when shown in UK cinemas at the bottom half of an Adult double-bill in 1974, MISS LESLIE’S DOLLS is an Exploitation Cinema lovers dream release.Director Joseph G. Prieto, known for Exploitation classic SHANTY TRAMP (1967), really should have been heralded as a trash film auteur among the likes of Russ Meyer, David F. Friedman, Dorish Wishman and Herschell Gordon Lewis for delivering such a delirious slice of lurid cinema. Clearly an influence on the works of John Waters, MISS LESLIE’S DOLLS is essential viewing. If you can imagine a fever dream encompassing Ed Wood in drag in Woods’ TAKE IT OUT IN TRADE (1972),Ron Garcia’s THE TOY BOX (1971) and Freddie Francis’ THE PSYCHOIPATH (1966) then we are halfway there to dismembering this one!
